Making the Red Planet

Here's a close up of the red soil that covers the Red Planet. This "dirt" was made by mixing sand, PVA craft glue, and paint. The sand gives it that realistic dirt texture while the glue leaves the final product firm, clean, and easy to work with. In fact, the final product feels very pleasant to touch. Paints are mixed in to achieve a desired color, usually a brown and black will make the dirt look like Blue Planet soil but here I used red and black to recreate the iron oxide rich soil of the Red Planet. After the "dirt paint" dried, I dry brushed the entire surface with a light red paint to give depth to the soils surface. And of course, small artificial grass tufts to add the lively feeling of the planet back when water still flowed over 3 billion years ago.
